White Tea
White tea is the least processed form of tea, made from the delicate silver buds and select young leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant which are steamed and dried. Because of this minimal processing, white tea contains more nutrients than its black or green cousins, while preserving the characteristic flavor of white tea and releasing many healthful benefits.
White tea derives its name from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant, which gives the plant a whitish appearance. White Teas are produced on a very limited scale in China and India due to the extremely stringent selection of raw material in white tea manufacturing process.
White Tea has a light, delicate, slightly sweet flavor that does not overwhelm the tongue.
For those concerned with caffeine, white tea has less caffeine than black or green tea, and far less than coffee, making it an excellent choice for those wishing to reduce caffeine.
Regarding the heath benefits, white tea contains polyphenols and high levels of catechins, that are reported to be responsible for lessening atherosclerotic plaques, reducing carcinogens, reducing risk of stroke, heart failure, cancer, diabetes.
The drinking white tea is a relaxing experience, tea drinkers often claim that drinking it helps them relieve stress realize a soothing effect. There a amino acid in tea called L-theanine that can enter the brain, and can reduce mental and physical stress.
L-theanine works by increasing the serotonin, dopamine and and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) level in the brain. The result appears to be a lower stress level and less anxiety. L-theanine has other properties that:
- lower blood pressure
- diminish signs of depression
- promote concentration
